GCoE Dissertation Excellence Award
Application Deadlines:
- Sep. 15 for fall semester
- Feb. 15 for spring semester
- June 15 for summer semester
Rewarding and encouraging excellence in research is a core value of the GCoE. The GCoE Dissertation Excellence Award is designed to reward PhD students that have achieved outstanding research results and encourage these students to complete their dissertation with excellence.
DEA Level, Duration, and Disbursement
The maximum amount of each DEA is limited to a total of $5,000 and is not renewable.
The DEA will be distributed in one of two ways:
- DEA Option 1: One installment of $5,000;
- DEA Option 2: Two installments of $2,500 each, made in two consecutive semesters (fall/spring, spring/summer, or summer/fall).
All awards will be disbursed directly to the student’s bursar account. Awards will be announced by the 25th day of the month of the application deadline.
Submission Process
The candidate’s PhD committee chair will collect all materials from the candidate and submit to: Bethany Burklund, Assistant to the Associate Dean, Gallogly College of Engineering, 202 W. Boyd Street, Rm. 107, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK 73019. It is preferred that the application package be submitted electronically to: bethanyhb@ou.edu.
There are three application deadlines per year.

2022-2023 Patti Johnson Wilson Foundation Scholarship
The Patti Johnson Wilson Foundation grants scholarships to full-time undergraduate students majoring in music, engineering, or Liberal Arts. The anticipated academic award will be between $5000 and $6000 for the academic year. In granting scholarships, the Foundation trustees consider the academic record, financial need, professor’s letter of recommendation, and the applicant’s desire to supplement his or her college expenses through part-time employment. The awards are made at the sole discretion of the Foundation trustees. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must me the following qualifications:
- Must be enrolled full-time
- Must be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior
- Must be majoring in Music, Engineering, or Liberal Arts (Anthropology, Classics, English, History, Languages, Literature, Philosophy, and Sociology)
- Must have minimum GPA of 3.5
- Must work part-time
- The trustees prefer that applicants work at least ten hours per week
Please turn in the application to the Financial Aid Office (Buchanan Hall, Room 105) by Friday, March 18th, by 5:00pm. The application may be found here.
Limited physical copies are available at the Engineering Dean’s Office in Carson Engineering Center, room 107 during normal business hours.

Along with providing scholarship winners with $2,000 toward their degree, we offer free resources including a one-week trip to Simpson Strong-Tie headquarters for first-time winners – giving them the opportunity to network with industry professionals and fellow scholarship recipients, along with our top executives.
We also provide students with free courses, videos, informal mentorship, and virtual networking opportunities.
For schools, we provide free product apps, educational videos, opportunities to collaborate or support curriculum, and we are currently creating an online learning portal geared specifically toward universities and students.

Valero Minority Engineering Summit (MES) Awarding $1,500 scholarships to first-year students

Program dates are May 17-20, 2022, in San Antonio, TX. (Stay Healthy protocols are mandatory on campus and will remain in effect throughout this event.) This all-expenses-paid developmental opportunity will take place at Valero Headquarters, and consist of learning, exploration, networking, volunteerism, and a site visit to a Valero Refinery.

New $2,500 Scholarship Opportunities at Mead & Hunt
Let me introduce myself to those who don’t know me. I’m Chris Le, and I graduated the Master’s of Arch program back in 2017. I work for Mead & Hunt, and AEC firm that’s been around for nearly 120 years. I am based in the Dallas office.
We’ve seen exponential growth in our firm, growing from 200 to over a 1000 in just the last 5-10 years. We have over 40 offices nationwide, and we offer design services including architecture, interior design, planning, building engineering, and cultural resources management. We serve different markets, including transportation, food & beverage, aviation, federal, and water resources. Additionally, we have a cultural resources team that helps with historic preservation and community engagement as it pertains to our projects and work. You can see more about us at: www.meadhunt.com
Besides being a point of contact for your students for intern / employment opportunities (feel free to share my email to your students), I wanted to get a head start on a project I’ve been working on for the last 6,7 months. Part of my commitment is to recruitment and support, but also for diversity, equity, and inclusion, of which I have helped lead and position our company for growing better, more diverse representation in management and leadership.
This semester, we are offering 4 scholarships for AEC / STEAM / CRM related fields of study.
- 2 are for graduating HS seniors that identify as being a part of one of the above fields of study. These are for $2,500 each. This scholarship is also for ethnic minorities. (While these will not be available for current students, you all may know some individuals who qualify)
- 2 are for current undergrads going into sophomore, junior, and senior status in their respective programs. These are for $2,500 each, and are NOT specified for ethnic minorities. These are available to anyone that meets the academic requirements.
- Fields include:
- Architecture / Interior Design / Planning / Lighting
- Construction Sciences
- Building Engineering (Structural / Civil / Electrical / Plumbing)
- Cultural Resource Management / Historic Preservation
- Related fields I’m not thinking of right now
In the future, we will be rolling out scholarships for:
- Women, LGBTQIA, Disability, and Veterans
- AEC/STEAM/CRM-related programs such as after-school programs, professional student organizations like NOMAS, etc
This is a brand new scholarship opportunity, and as the co-author, I’m extending a personal invitation for your students to apply. Being the first year, these scholarships are not yet established and may have low application rates as we get the word out on it. That goes in your students’ favor. Being of the inaugural class of Mead & Hunt Scholars will help establish your students’ future careers and be a pipeline to employment during/after their academic careers.
What I’m asking for:
- Email contact information for students/staff who preside over student organizations like NOMAS, AIAS, etc as well as organizations that target protected classes such as LGBTQIA in Architecture, Women in Architecture, Black Engineering Students.
- Email contact information for who in your college disseminates this information to the student bodies
When the scholarship is officially available for applying (within the next week), I will forward on the link to you and those parties for distribution. Winners will be announced before graduation, and graduation cords will be sent in time to show off at graduation.

Strong-Tie Undergraduate Fellowships: Architecture, Structural/Civil Engineering, and Construction Management Students
As part of the Strong-Tie Undergraduate Fellowship, Simpson Strong-Tie has established a scholarship program to assist architecture, structural/ civil engineering and construction management students at participating colleges and universities throughout the US. The student scholarship program offers scholarships to support education and encourage the design and building of safer, stronger structures. The scholarship program is administered by Scholarship Management Services®, a division of Scholarship America®. Scholarship Management Services is the nation's largest designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations, foundations, associations and individuals. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, age, gender, disability or national origin.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants to the Simpson Strong-Tie Student Scholarship program must be enrolled as juniors (60 semester hours or equivalent) or seniors in full-time undergraduate study in architecture, structural/civil engineering or construction management.
Up to one hundred (100) $2,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2022-2023 academic year. Awards are not renewable, but students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements. Awards are for undergraduate study only.
APPLICATION
Interested students must complete the online application and mail it along with a current, complete transcript of grades to Scholarship Management Services postmarked no later than March 18, 2022. Grade reports are not acceptable. Online transcripts must display student name, school name, grade and credit hours earned for each course, and term in which each course was taken. Applicants will receive acknowledgment of receipt of their application. If an acknowledgment card is not received within three weeks, applicants may call Scholarship Management Services to verify that the application has been received. Applicants are responsible for gathering and submitting all necessary information. Applications are evaluated on the information supplied; therefore, answer all questions as completely as possible. Incomplete applications will not be evaluated. All information received is considered confidential and is reviewed only by Scholarship Management Services.
SELECTION OF RECIPIENTS
Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, a statement of educational and career goals, and an outside appraisal. Selection of recipients is made by Scholarship Management Services. In no instance does any officer or employee of Simpson Strong-Tie play a part in the selection. All applicants agree to accept the decision as final. Applicants will be notified by May. Not all applicants to the program will be selected as recipients. Students may reapply to the program each year they meet eligibility requirements.
PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarship Management Services processes scholarship payments on behalf Simpson Strong-Tie Company, Inc. Payments will be made in early to mid-August. A check will be mailed to each recipient's home address, made payable to the school.
OBLIGATIONS
Recipients have no obligation to Simpson Strong-Tie. They are, however, required to notify Scholarship Management Services of any changes inaddress, school enrollment, or other relevant information and to send a complete transcript when requested.
REVISIONS
Simpson Strong-Tie Company, Inc. reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this scholarship program and to make changes at any time including termination of the program.
