INSIGHT Into Diversity Study Abroad Scholarship for Underrepresented Students

Studying abroad can be a life-changing experience. We know that institutions of higher education and corporate recruiters see the value in how these opportunities enhance teamwork and cultural competency skills. A study abroad experience is one of the most dynamic ways to make a student’s résumé stand out as they look to gain experience in their field of study and as they enter the workforce.

INSIGHT Into Diversity is committed to improving educational equity for all students, but especially those from underrepresented backgrounds who may not traditionally be afforded the ability or opportunity to participate in a study abroad program.

To assist in this effort, we are awarding a $2,000 scholarship to five individual students currently enrolled in a baccalaureate-granting institution, graduate school, or health profession school. The international education programs students can apply for now are for Summer 2020 and Fall 2020.

Eligibility

All applicants must:

• Be a U.S. citizen
• Be from an underrepresented group based on race, ethnicity, LGBTQ or Veteran status, or have a physical disability
• Be a current full-time student in good standing at an accredited institution of higher education including 4-year baccalaureate-granting institutions, law school, graduate school, or health professions school
• Be in the process of applying to, or accepted into, a study abroad program of at least four weeks in a single country (U.S. State Department Level 1 or 2 location) outside of the United States. Proof of program acceptance is required prior to scholarship disbursement.
• Not be a previous recipient of an INSIGHT Into Diversity Study Abroad Scholarship

Deadlines

Fall and Summer 2020 study abroad program applicants:

• The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2019.
• Notification will be sent electronically to scholarship winners by January 15, 2020.
• Scholarship recipients must accept or reject their award by January 31, 2020.
• Scholarship winners will be announced and profiled in the March 2020 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program

Now Accepting Applications for Summer 2020

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides students with educational opportunities to gain real-world, hands-on research experience with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy. The MLEF program was created in 1995 with the goal of improving opportunities for under-represented and minority students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. All eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.

The mission of the MLEF program is to strengthen a diverse pipeline of future STEM professionals, and this program has mentored several hundred of the best and brightest students from across the nation for future careers in STEM.

As a MLEF participant, you will train under the mentorship of scientists and engineers while working on mission-focused research projects. During the 10-week appointment, you will receive a weekly stipend and may be eligible for housing and travel allowances. You will also gain insight into how the Department of Energy is working to meet the energy challenges of the future.

Eligibility (at the time of application)

• Be at least 18 years of age at time of application.
• Be a U.S. Citizen.
• Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8.
• Be available to participate in the full 10-week program.
• Be currently enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student in a STEM program at an accredited college or university at the Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral level.
• Must be at least a college sophomore at the time of application. Students pursuing an Associate’s degree are eligible to apply if transferring to pursue a Bachelor’s degree for fall 2020.

Sooner Engineering Education Center Scholarships

Sooner Engineering Education Center Scholarships Available

The Sooner Engineering Education (SEED) Center of the OU Gallogly College of Engineering (GCoE) encourages undergraduate and graduate engineering students to apply to be named a Boggs Family SEED Scholar. This award includes a $2000 scholarship for the Fall 2019 and Spring 2020 semesters.  As members of the SEED Center outreach team, SEED Scholars will assist and eventually lead in planning, organizing, and executing educational outreach activities at the Rawl Engineering Practice Facility and other sites. Other responsibilities supporting the outreach mission may be assigned based on individual strengths and interests. Each SEED Scholar will commit, on average, six hours per week to support engineering education outreach activities and will have at least two week-day mornings free from coursework obligations. Scholars must have a 2.75 GPA and maintain full-time enrollment. Qualities demonstrated by the successful applicant through his or her application include:

• Ability and experience teaching or mentoring younger students or peers • Initiative and leadership for completing tasks without constant supervision • Dependability
• Attention to detail • Good oral and written communication skills • Effective time management • Strong sense of responsibility to a team work group

Applications will include a personal statement responding to these questions (1-2 pages): •Why do you want to contribute to GCoE outreach? •What experiences and qualifications will you bring to the SEED Center that will contribute to a strong outreach program? •What do you hope to learn from your experience?

Two letters of recommendation should be submitted directly by the references to the SEED Center wherein they comment on the qualities listed above. In addition to these letters, your complete application must include your personal statement, a resume, a complete schedule (Fall 2019) showing available times for SEED Scholar activities, a list of additional responsibilities outside of coursework and their estimated time commitment, and an unofficial transcript with cumulative GPA. OEF Scholarship

The Oklahoma Engineering Foundation has extended their scholarship deadline for this year. Two scholarships available this year that total $4,000 per scholarship. 

The student who is awarded a scholarship must meet the requirements outlined in the application and maintain a 3.0 Cumulative GPA. I’ve attached the application to this email but it can also be accessed through their website.

Engineering Empowerment Scholarship

Tacuna Systems are excited to announce our annual “Women in Engineering Empowerment Scholarship” for 2019.

Women are still very much under-represented in STEM fields both in higher education and in industry. Our goal is to help equip two female students overcome this gender gap. We will offer $1,000 each toward her studies in science, technology, engineering, or math.

One scholarship will be awarded to a female student in a US institution and one scholarship will be awarded to a female student in a Canadian institution.

Who Can Apply?

• Females only
• Must be currently pursuing a degree in STEM: science, technology, engineering or math
• Can be an undergraduate or graduate student
• Open to students attending a US or Canadian institution
• Entrants must be 17 years or older
• No GPA requirement

Criteria

Create a video of NO longer than 2 minutes showcasing a STEM project you have worked on, or are currently working on.

Things to consider while creating your video:

• Enthusiasm – Passion is great, share it!
• Learning – What did you learn?
• Helping – How did it help you and/or could help others?
• Originality – Do you have ideas that schools, governments or industry have not thought about?

• URL to project video

SMRP Scholarship Opportunity

I’m reaching out on behalf of the Society for Maintenance & Reliability and Professionals (SMRP), a nonprofit professional society formed by practitioners to promote excellence in maintenance, reliability and physical asset management. Every year, SMRP offers five scholarships, ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, to students pursuing related coursework. Applications are now being accepted online until May 30, 2019. Students do not need to be members of SMRP to qualify.

Who helps you with understanding credit cards and the implications of a credit score before and after you've amassed debt? Where do you find study groups for academic support? How can you make the best of your College of Engineering experience? I would like to discuss any of these items and perhaps other areas that may be of interest to you during an interview. I need you to help me help others like you by participating in the African American engineering transfer study.

I am recruiting African American engineering transfer students for a study. This study is about the transfer process, challenges you may have encountered, and the things that helped. I am also interested in the College of Engineering’s policies, processes, programs, and resources which you have utilized. I am interested in hearing from people who have transferred into the College of Engineering. All information collected is confidential. You may qualify if:
